Training mental health professionals in Doncaster

Today we finished the last of four bespoke training days for mental health professionals in the Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH). The venue was St Catherine's House, a grade II listed Victorian building set in beautiful grounds. It was originally built in 1838 as the home for the Banks family. The family sold it to the Ministry of Health in 1930 when it was turned into a 'mental institution'. Today it has a number of uses, including providing conference facilities. The training days were attended by a mix of healthcare professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, and occupational therapists. Most delegates were attending the critical appraisal training for professional development but there were also people involved with research and revising for exams. On each day we went through appraising the methods and results of clinical papers, to better understand how to identify the strengths and weaknesses of research. All the delegates received access to the Critical Appraisal Online Course to consolidate their learning and a CPD certificate for moving their practice forward.

Critical appraisal training for Staff and Associate Specialists (SAS) Doctors

The Critical Appraisal Company ran a one day course for a group of Staff and Associate Specialists (SAS) Doctors in Wakefield this week. All the doctors were specialists in psychiatry and eager to improve their critical appraisal knowledge and skills. The course was led by Dr Gurpal S. Gosall of The Critical Appraisal Company, who also works as a Consultant Psychiatrist in Lancashire. Over the course of the day the doctors completed short exercises under the supervision of the tutor and answered questions using interactive digital handsets. Critical appraisal training in Ireland

Critical appraisal training in Ireland

We ran a bespoke critical appraisal training course in County Wicklow, Ireland today. The one day course was attended by a group of psychiatrists for the purposes of professional development and MRCPsych exam preparation. Bespoke courses are always excellent value for money. The cost per delegate is significantly below that of our Critical Appraisal Masterclass and Workshop. Indeed, because the speaker fee is fixed, the more delegates that attend the cheaper is the cost per head. Delegates also save money because bespoke courses take place in a location of their choice, saving on travel expenses. Critical appraisal courses for psychiatrists

We ran a bespoke critical appraisal course today for a group of psychiatrists in South Yorkshire. Bespoke courses are easy to organise and are a cost-effective way of training large numbers of people. We provide advertising flyers, CPD certificates and tailor the course material to the needs of the audience. Today's event was attended by Consultant Psychiatrists, trainee psychiatrists and GP trainees. We assumed no prior knowledge and taught critical appraisal from first principles. Practical advice was given on how to improve journal club presentations and the topics covered included those examined in the MRCPsych exams. Interactive digital handsets were used to test the delegates throughout the day. Delegates are given access to the Critical Appraisal Online Course to help them consolidate their new knowledge and skills. If you want to organise a similar course for your department, get in touch!

Critical appraisal for MRCPsych Paper 3

Critical appraisal for MRCPsych Paper 3

Complicated work rotas make it difficult for doctors in a study group to get time off together during the working week. As a result, we are often asked to run bespoke events during weekends. Yesterday we ran a bespoke training course for a group of psychiatrists preparing for the MRCPsych Paper 3 exam in March 2011. The exam of the Royal College of Psychiatrists includes questions on evidence-based medicine as well as clinical psychiatry. The psychiatrists had all studied the Critical Appraisal Online Course over the last two months and the teaching focused on consolidating their new knowledge and skills using real clinical papers. It was great to see how confident everyone was by the end of the day. With critical appraisal making up 40% of the questions in the MRCPsych Paper 3, we fully expect these psychiatrists to pass the exam with flying colours. Good luck everyone!
