Research Skills Training for Clinical Microbiology Trainees

02nd Apr 2025 | Bespoke Course

In March 2025, we delivered a tailored training session for a group of Clinical Microbiology trainees, focused on building confidence in core research skills essential for their specialty. The session offered an engaging introduction to clinical study design and medical statistics, with content specifically selected for relevance to microbiology practice and research.

Participants explored the strengths and limitations of different study types—including cohort studies, case-control, randomised controlled trials, and outbreak investigations—within the context of infectious disease and antimicrobial research. We also covered key statistical principles such as data interpretation, bias, and sample size considerations, using real examples to bring the material to life.

The interactive format encouraged discussion and application, helping trainees not only understand research methods but also how to critically evaluate the evidence they encounter in clinical practice.

This session laid the foundation for more confident research engagement and better evidence-based decision-making in microbiology.
