January 2025: Critical Appraisal and Medical Statistics Training for Dental Trainees – Liverpool

In January 2025, we had the pleasure of delivering an interactive training session for dental trainees at Liverpool Dental Hospital—a group that included those working on research projects, dissertations, and journal clubs. The session was designed to enhance their ability to critically appraise the scientific literature and develop a strong understanding of medical statistics.

The day was packed with hands-on activities, where we took participants through the process of critical appraisal, helping them understand how to evaluate study designs, assess the validity of findings, and apply evidence to their own work. Whether the trainees were reviewing research for journal clubs or working on their own dissertation projects, they gained the tools to interpret data more effectively and challenge conclusions with confidence.

In addition to critical appraisal, we dove into the world of medical statistics. Understanding the significance of p-values, confidence intervals, and statistical tests is vital for anyone engaging with clinical research. The session ensured that participants could break down complex statistical concepts and apply them to real-world examples—vital for those looking to contribute to dental research or further their academic careers.

By the end of the day, the trainees were equipped with the skills to engage deeply with the research they encounter, critically assess its relevance and quality, and apply that knowledge to their own academic or clinical practice.
